He chronicles the overt political agendas, public displays of power, forced participation, and widespread use of these events in the Soviet drive to eradicate existing cultural norms and replace them with new icons of Soviet ideology. Rolf shows how the new Red Calendar became an essential tool in redefining celebrations in the Soviet Union.

Rolf traces the roots of Soviet mass festivals in disparate multiethnic celebrations, protests, and street marches during the late imperial era. He then contrasts these with postrevolutionary events that sought to dissolve ethnic rituals and unify the masses. By the end of the civil war, the Bolsheviks had a well-defined calendar of events and began to dictate the forms of public celebration in accordance with party rhetoric. In distant regions, organizers attempted to follow the models of Moscow and Leningrad, despite budgetary constraints and local resistance. In many outlying areas a hybridization of events developed as local customs merged with party mandates. People often made use of official holidays to adopt their own agendas, yet continued to follow the line of an official Soviet culture. Mass festivals were thus an important tool for Sovietizing the cultural landscape.

After the Second World War, the Soviets exported their festival culture to Eastern Europe and the Baltic states, which resulted in a melding of Soviet guidelines with national cultural forms. Additionally, Rolf compares and contrasts Soviet mass spectacles with mass events in Italy, Germany, and the United States to reveal their similar influence despite divergent political, cultural, and social systems.

In the Soviet Union, mass festivals continued through the time of Khrushchev, Brezhnev, and up until perestroika, despite their fading political impact. Rolf finds that in the end, Soviet celebrations became effectively ingrained in Russia’s post-Soviet national memory, which ironically was the intent of the original festival planners.

One of the biggest flaws with many traditional spiritual systems is that they give you such a somber outlook. Although you know that I abhor creating doctrines, if I ever had to create a set of tenets for a spiritual path to healing, number one on my list would be to make sure to laugh as often as possible throughout every single day--and preferably laugh at myself. This would be hands down over and above any form of prayer, meditation, chanting, or diet reform. Day-to-day problems never seem as big when viewed through a veil of humor and love. Ms. Moorjani's story is amazing. Her gentle nature comes through as she recounts her life from a young age, through trying to please her family by adhering to cultural traditions, getting ill, then the journey of understanding her illness and the fact that she always had control. Her near-death experiences really make one view one's own life a little differently. If you are interested in the afterlife - or if you have a fear of dying - read this book.

I have read THOSUANDS of Near Death Experiences and THIS ONE had a very special spoiler I will not share--but it WAS the ONLY reason I bought this one book. My lover passed away a few years ago from the SAME EXACT condition and I mean right down to her (this author) being so wasted muscle wise and obvious to most people she had zero chance to live not to mention come back and have a good body again. I am female and wanted to know HOW my lover felt when he passed. Since both died of same rare disease. After reading her book and rushing to the part of her actual death and her discovery of WHY she had cancer in the first place-I was positive this is the same reason I lost my lover. Her book is VERY special more so to people losing someone to cancer. However her reason and my lovers reason does not mean it is everyone's reason who is departing w cancer. But his personality was the same as his and mental positioning.I was not with him when he died because his cell phone was left in the ambulance and he could not call me - meantime I was in another city waiting for him and seeing a big crow dancing it front of me and following me around. I will give you my spoiler--it was HIM telling he was happy. Meantime I am texting another friend I may be dying soon because this crow was dancing and following me around. We were to meet at a concert knowing he only had days so Doctors were just letting him go out and live life on tons of prednisone. That gave him all the energy in the world despite the fact he looked like our science school skeleton.I bought this on Kindle a few years ago show I hope it still shows up as a "verified" review.

This is the third Dying to be Me book my husband and I have ordered. When I read it many years ago it touched me deeply and I knew I would never look at or approach life the same again...I felt empowered. Since my initial reading, my husband and mother-in-law have read it and we have some pretty deep conversations about the message Anita has shared. About a year ago a friend of my husband received some bad news...his wife had scleroderma, a disease within the body that creates an over-production of collagen; everything within the body (skin, internal organs, etc) begin to thicken and tighten to a point of such severe pain that it is debilitating. For our friends wife the pain was so bad she was trying to figure out how to kill herself just to end it all. My husband ordered her Anita's book and healing meditation CD. I will not write here that she miraculously healed because that is not a truth...but she has portrayed to us that Anita's book filled her with such a sense that everything, even death is ok, there is nothing to fear. This is a profound book and one that must be read to truly get an understanding.

This is the second time I have read "Dying to Be Me", each time I get more out of it. I felt drawn to read it again a week ago and a couple days into reading it I got informed of my brothers terminal cancer diagnosis. I am not sure he is open to read this but I will see how it goes. It's very difficult to approach someone in that state of mind about thinking differently concerning a disease that has so much fear surrounding it.I have run the gamut of religions and belief systems in my life and what Anita writes is what resonates the most with me. I know I have spent most of my life not really loving myself and this is the path I choose to finish living my life on. With so much fear running rampant now we can see all the damage that is the result of it. Choosing to love yourself is the only thing we have control over.

This book changed my life. It changed my views not only on death but also on life. I have listened to it over and over on Audible and have read the paper version too. I also went to see Anita speak with Wayne Dyer in what was his last tour. This book is one I think every person should read, especially if you fear death or are facing a life-threatening illness for yourself or in your family. Listening to Anita read the book in audio is the most powerful way to consume it I believe. But either way, READ IT. Keep an open mind. Some of it will challenge you. Listen to the whole thing before making judgements. I promise it will be worth it.

I have read accounts and watched videos of near-death experiences for decades, and I hear clearly that there is no need to be afraid. Anita Moorjani's account of her experience is one of the clearest, validated, and instructive accounts to this effect. I think as more and more people become familiar with these stories, we may stand a chance of letting go of all our fear-based self-destructive patterns, including war, addiction, disease, and poverty. I highly recommend this book.

This book changed my life. I recently had a baby and was suffering from postpartum anxiety. I had convinced myself that I was going to get cancer and be unable to watch my daughter grow. This fear crippled me, and then I remembered a woman a few years back suggesting this book to me. I finally purchased it. It's funny how the universe does that; gives you what you need when you need it. The tools were always there, I just needed to want to read it. Or need to. Anita is amazing. Her story is so inspiring. When I read it, it's as if a light went off. I have always had trouble connecting with the idea of heaven but when I read Anita's account of the other dimension it just clicked as if I recognized the place she spoke of. Her biggest message, to love yourself and be your true self without fear really resonated with me and I'm forever grateful to her for sharing her wonderful story.

Update - I completed this book and most of book 2, which was poorly designed and a general waste of time. The quality in book 2 is much less than book 1 and there are no more books in the Bastien adult series! Book 2 did not prepare me well for playing simple low grade piano music. I now regret using the Bastien adult series books. I now use the Alfred adult series and am getting more out of it. This update is after almost 2 years of playing. If I had to do it over, I'd go with the Alfred adult series.Original -These newer adult piano books for adults are similar. I liked the music in this book over the Alfred series, but there is still overlap. Choose one series and just keep playing! It will take time, maybe several years, until a beginner has the skill and knowledge to play those beautiful and complex pieces that draw us to to the piano. Adults tend to give up early feeling that it takes too much time and commitment or progress doesn't come fast enough. A competent and experienced teacher will be an asset in learning piano. A teacher watching for proper form is very important to avoid injury from bad habits. Books don't teach form or correct you for getting lazy.The music theory is light in this book and assumes that the reader has no prior musical knowledge. I recommend supplementing with a music theory book.

I really like this book for beginning adult piano students. It is has a nice assortment of music that practices the theory and techniques introduced. It contains a lot of theory workpages - labeling notes and rhythms, etc.

I bought this book so I could teach myself to play piano for the first time at the young age of 43. I find this book very good in that it explains each lesson thoroughly and shows the correct fingering of each piece. This book does not come with a CD and I found that is was difficult to learn the songs since I didn't know them and didn't know how they were supposed to sound. I ended up purchasing the CD separately and it's been a great tool to help me get a feel for the songs. This might be something to consider when purchasing this. However, the book itself is great, and has a lot of pieces in it that are fun to play and challenging, and made for adults. Don't do what I did and race through it. Take your time and practice each lesson. I was so excited to learn to play that I got to the end of the book and realized I was still struggling and hadn't actually learned much. Now I'm going through it a second time slowly and methodically and making sure I have each piece down before I move on to the next. It's well written and easy to follow. I have friends who play piano so if something doesn't make sense to me I show them the book and ask for clarification. Much cheaper than a piano teacher! I recommend this book for any adult beginner. Just take your time and have patience. Happy playing!

This is a shame; I didn't even bother looking through the book as it came with the front cover completely torn off and so I set out for a refund immediately. I'm sure it is a good book (I flipped through it side-by-side w/ the Alfred book for adults), but I did not bother keeping it due to the poor condition it came in. I love teaching Bastien to young beginners (children) and wanted to try the adult one for my older students.

A music professor recommended this book to me, and it has lived up to high expectations.

I am a music teacher and frequently use this book for students who are not true beginners, but just need to take things a bit more slowly than others. I find the theory pages to be excellent tools and the chords are introduced in such a way to make them easy to understand and remember. I depend on this book heavily when a student has completed a level but not quite ready for the next. I have not used it for a beginning adult, but would if the situation arose. I have tried to order this book from other sites I frequent for music resources and am told it is no longer available. I certainly hope that will not be the case.

Occasionally my adult beginning voice students want to develop some basic keyboard ability - this is a perfect approach for working on one’s own between lessons.

As an adult I wanted a beginner book that is catered to my age group. Each lesson is easy to follow and doesn't move to fast or slow. I am enjoying having a new hobby!
